In this essay i am going to be exploring power and control through language structure and characterization in the two book called The tempest by William Shakespeare and Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.Power is the ability or capacity to do something in a particular way.Control the power to influence or direct people’s behavior or the course of events.

The tempest begins in a very action packed way with, when king Alonso and his crew are on a ship in the sea and a very violent storm brews on them. The storm is caused by a character  who is very important in the story. This is prospero, prospero is very powerful and allot of power and control in the book is revolved around him. Prospero is meant to be duke of Milan however his brother Antonio steals the title and makes himself Duke of Milan and is looking for revenge on him using two key character  in the story who are slaves. These 2 key characters that are slaves are called,Ariel and Caliban in the story Antonio uses power and control in many different ways to get back at his brother.Because of this proper decides to just study magic and has a aim to ruin Antonio life.

The book Frankenstein is about a doctor called Victor Frankenstein who doesn’t agree with science and tries to manipulate science and Gods work by remaking life after death. However Frankenstein work backfires the monster that creates does not turn out how he wants it to be and has demands which Frankenstein can not tend to.The monster then sets out to ruin Frankenstein life which leads to many bad things happening.Power and control in Frankenstein is explored through victor and the monsters relationship and the fact they both have power on and off.Frankenstein is based on Mary Shelley’s experience in Switzerland. A lot of the settings in the book ‘Frankenstein’ is based on her own life, things she saw in the news and interesting things. The creation of the book happened through a series of events. There was a thunderstorm the continued for days and lead Mary Shelley’s husband and all their friends to stay indoors. Lord Byron wanted everyone to tell a ghost story. At the time Mary Shelley wasn’t prepared but wanted to write about the mysterious fears of nature and arouse a stimulating horror.

in act 1 scene 1 of the tempest, there is a big disruption over hierarchy the reason why is because the boatswain has the power and control over the rest of his crew. The reason why the boatswain has the most power and control is because he is the most experienced individual on the boat and because he is the captain of the ship. He has both the authority and the ability the speak to his crew anyways he likes because of his position.Boatswain would not be able to tell Alonso and Antonio what to the or how to act. The reason why is because they are higher than him in the hierarchy and have more authority and power. The boatswain’s position on the boat allows him to exploit power and control on the ship and also allows him to have a major influence over the crewmates. Boatswain demands for respect. The way that he does is that he speaks to people who are higher than him courageously and with great confidence. He makes his position on the ship very clear no matter how high they are in the hierarchy

Witting to Respond

Dear Samantha Taylor,

I recently read your article about teenagers use of social media and the effects it has on them. After reading your article I felt it was crucial that I write to you expressing my views and thoughts as I strongly disagree with your view in the article. I feel the quotes mentioned in your article about teenagers are correct as I am a 15 year old boy and I witness these things on a daily basis, in and out of school. One of the main things that I thought was very misleading was your article’s title. I felt this was very deceptive and didn’t really relate to the article. I strongly agree with Jonathan Franzen and the others who feel that teenagers are unaware and blind to the amount of time they spend on their computers and phones interacting with others. I feel that it is very important for me as a student to step out and talk about these issues that occur in our generation.

In this day and age teenagers are afraid of socializing face to face and cannot even sit with someone and have a decent conversation. This is due to the fact that they have spent most of their lives behind computer screens and phones, every time they have a conversation with someone it is over social media and rarely in person. It is on these grounds that I find myself agreeing with Jonathan Franzen when he says that “online socialising is causing a shallow culture and makes teenagers unable to socialise face to face”. I strongly agree with this statement and believe that this also has a knock on effect for students later on in life. The fact that younger teenagers cannot communicate face to face means that they tend to become introverted characters later on in life. This all stems from them not being able to talk and communicate with others from a young age.

In addition to the points made by Jonathan Franzen about teenagers being social inadequate, John Henley has explored the danger to the teenagers that are giving out their details and information online. John Henley suggested that teenager  “couldn’t care less about privacy “ and I strongly agree with the point made as nowadays as a young man I see and hear young males and females posting private things. For example mobile phone numbers are posted on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. These are all very dangerous traits as it could lead to them being stalked or being target by an older adult. What I feel teenagers do not understand is that all off these things are very misleading as later on in life, if they were to be employed by someone and the employer saw all off this it could lead to them not getting the job. This is because they feel that the applicant does not make mature decisions. The fact that we as a generation are allowing our children to be this attached to social media is very bad. Personally  I think that it is not preparing us for the real world and the adult world as we will not be able to communicate and relate to others face to face on a natural speaking level as we would have spent all our life texting and behind a white screen.

Another key point that I found interesting that Samantha Taylor mentioned was when she said that    “We could be raising a hedonistic generation…are in distinct danger of detaching themselves from what the rest of us would consider the real world.” I strongly agreed with this point as I felt that this is what we were setting ourselves up for by leaving our children to be wild and free on social media. The reason why I say this is because if children are constantly on the internet and never socialising  with others face to face when they become older it would make them very introverted and they will fear theses type of situation which they could  be facing on a day to day basis as a grown man. Also I feel that if teenagers are constantly on their phones and screens it may affect the speech and may lead to them being verbally not as strong as their peers as they are never actually speaking verbally to anybody apart from typing on a computer screen.

Although I can understand how some teenagers are frustrated by this article and some of the points made in it, I do feel there are a small minority of teenagers who are very responsible and do take with what they do on social media and the things they post and share seriously. However I do feel the majority of teenagers and children are spending too much time on the internet and are very careless with what they do and post on it. If this was not to change I feel future generations  would become very introverted and would struggle in face to face modern day situations.

The tension was getting more and more intense. We were sitting in the dressing room waiting to go out to Wembley Stadium. The dream stadium of every players career, that distinctive red that no other stadium could look like. From the striking red high seats to the carefully one leveled green grass. I couldn’t believe it that we had made it this far. We beat Europe’s best team in the semi-finals. Docklands done the impossible to reach the finals as they, a team from the lowest tier of the English football leagues. Eltigani Ibrahim was the wonder kid having scored in the semi-finals as a 17 year old reserve.

As we came out onto the pitch all I saw were people and flashing lights not a single empty seat. The roar of the crowd made my heart beat. Nothing, nothing had ever rocked me like the way the crowd and the stadium did. Eighty thousand people in the stadium and millions more watching us on TV. We all knew we could do this and we had done it before. Looking over to the west stand I could see the wall of red and the thousands of supporters that had travelled miles to watch this almighty FA CUP final. When we lined up to meet the other team all I could hear was the crowd screaming. The stadium roared with excitement and many people cheering and chanting in unison.

The referee’s whistle blew and Chelsea had the ball. We were pushed back and were desperately defending Chelsea’s fierce attack. My heart stopped for about 5 seconds and the crowd were silent as mighty of a shot from Eden hazard hit the post and thanks to some fantastic saves we were still in it. After 35 minutes we had our first threatening attack. A skilled run by Jamie Roberts down the left flank with a good cross into the six yard box, I sprinted towards it and dived for the ball. Suddenly I felt a sharp pain in my ankle, a Chelsea defender had fouled me and I was awarded with a penalty. I was the captain and I had the job to put the ball in the back of the net from the twelve yard spot. I stepped over the ball and my heart  was racing like a formula 1 race car .Here I was in front of millions of people watching having to score from a penalty.I eyed the top left corner and kicked the ball. From the minute the ball left my foot i knew it was a bad hit and dropped to the ground in disappointment The ball flew to the corner but it had only  found the post. I had missed the penalty. Knowing  I had let my team down i got up in disappointment and i was determined to make it up to my team. After all the work we done to get here i was not willing to let us lose this match.

After a long and hard first half we went back in the dressing room and our manager gave us a briefing on what we needed to do in the second half. I tried to listen but my mind wasn’t there. I couldn’t  believe I had missed that penalty. I sat in the corner of the changing room leaning against the metal lockers my head was everywhere,i was thinking how everyone would be disappointment at me for missing that vital penalty. We were back on the field and it was a very evenly matched second half with chances to each team. We played good attacking football but just couldn’t find that cutting edge. The whistle blew loudly and the match had to go in extra time. We were all tired  but the hunger of winning drove us onto  to new limits . We walked out on the pitch and were as determined as ever to win this match. We had a good chance but failed to score in the first half so the game would have to go on to the second half of extra time.

The game kept going and there was no sign a winner would be found. Each team matched the other ball from ball, man for man and this would certainly go on to be a penalty shootout. Chelsea had a corner at the last minute of extra time. The big notorious Defender Hamza oubad  headed the ball and I raced to towards it running  towards the Chelsea goal. Chelsea had pushed all their players forward and had only one defender in front of goal. I ran and ran pushing myself to my limit. I knew somewhere in that sea of red was my father. I couldn’t see him but I knew he was there willing me and cheering me on . I flicked the ball over the Chelsea defender and aimed at the near post. I kicked it perfectly and it flew straight in the back of the net. GOAL! I couldn’t believe it that I had won the game and was the captain of a FA cup winning team. The crowd went wild and I was there the emotion that ran through my body was one of a kind!. I was so proud of myself as we won the cup and it was even better knowing I was the hero that scored the winning goal. It was a feeling that could never be seen or felt again. A tear ran down my eye as I looked into the crowd and saw my mum and dad watching and screaming me on.

I was handed over the trophy and I and lifted it up and shouted ‘docklands forever! ‘It was a team effort and everyone did their job. We had done it. The greatest story football has ever heard. The unheard of DJFC  had won the famous FA CUP. Everyone called us the wonders.

Getting money to buy that new pair of Trainers you want if you do well on that test. Do you think students should get paid for good grades? In my opinion there are three reasons why  I think students should get paid for good grades. One of them is more focus on school. Second reason is they love money so they’ll do what they have to; to get the money they want. Third, reason they’ll have better behaviour and to not mess around and class and be disruptive because eventually they  would realise that the good ones are the ones that get paid.

Students will focus more on school if they know they’re getting paid for doing their work, homework etc. I know if I were getting paid for doing well in school I would try my hardest on everything to get money of my own that I earned from school. Focus is a big thing in school, if you don’t focus on your work,  paying attention you won’t know what to do if you don’t focus to get that good grade you want. I believe that as the generations go by the students will start to realise that they can focus and get and income and also benefit by having a good education,  and by having good grades. This will be a win, win situation for the students because nowadays kids love money and will do almost anything for it.

Kids of all ages love money they reason they do is because they’ll want to have their own instead of always asking their parents. Because they have money of their own to spend and their parents can’t tell them anything about how they spend their money. When I have my own money I say my mom can’t tell me anything because it’s my money not hers I could do whatever I want with my money , that I earned . Every kid will love to money of their own. And also kids will feel that they can get even extra money because sometimes parents don’t have money to give to their children so the kids might feel that working hard at school can get them a little cash in their pocket to spend on anything they want without doing anything special but concentrating in their education and producing results.

Do you have students in your school who misbehave? But love to get things from their parents? Should those kids get paid? What should they  do? Work harder in school and behave so they can get new things. I think that kids would behave better if parents and teachers worked together so that the children who misbehave and are very disruptive and do not try there hardest in class do not have any money. Because sometimes children don’t care when they get in trouble because they do not loss anything so perhaps if parents stopped things at home and teachers stopped things at school like getting money it could change the way the child behaves. I also think that it could change the way the child has a view to learning and it could be more positive than a negative view.STUDENTS SHOULD BE PAID FOR GOOD GRADES!!!
