In this essay i am going to be exploring power and control through language structure and characterization in the two book called The tempest by William Shakespeare and Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.Power is the ability or capacity to do something in a particular way.Control the power to influence or direct people’s behavior or the course of events.

The tempest begins in a very action packed way with,when king Alonso and his crew are on a ship in the sea and a very violent storm brews on them.The storm is caused by a character  who is very important in the story.This is prospero,prospero is very powerful and allot of power and control in the book is revolved around him. Prospero is meant to be duke of Milan however his brother Antonio steals the title and makes himself Duke of Milan and is looking for revenge on him using two key character  in the story who are slaves.These 2 key characters that are slaves are called,Ariel and Caliban in the story Antonio uses power and control in many different ways to get back at his brother.Because of this proper decides to just study magic and has a aim to ruin Antonio life.

The book Frankenstein is about a doctor called Victor Frankenstein who doesn’t agree with science and tries to manipulate science and Gods work by remaking life after death.However Frankenstein work backfires the monster that creates does not turn out how he wants it to be and has demands which Frankenstein can not tend to.The monster then sets out to ruin Frankenstein life which leads to many bad things happening.Power and control in Frankenstein is explored through victor and the monsters relationship and the fact they both have power on and off.Frankenstein is based on Mary Shelley’s experience in Switzerland. A lot of the settings in the book ‘Frankenstein’ is based on her own life, things she saw in the news and interesting things. The creation of the book happened through a series of events. There was a thunderstorm the continued for days and lead Mary Shelley’s husband and all their friends to stay indoors. Lord Byron wanted everyone to tell a ghost story. At the time Mary Shelley wasn’t prepared but wanted to write about the mysterious fears of nature and arouse a stimulating horror.

in act 1 scene 1 of the tempest,there is a big disruption over hierarchy the reason why is because the boatswain has the power and control over the rest of his crew.The reason why the boatswain has the most power and control is because he is the most experienced individual on the boat and because he is the captain of the ship. He has both the authority and the ability the speak to his crew anyways he likes because of his position.Boatswain would not be able to tell Alonso and Antonio what to the or how to act. The reason why is because they are higher than him in the hierarchy and have more authority and power. The boatswain’s position on the boat allows him to exploit power and control on the ship and also allows him to have a major influence over the crewmates. Boatswain demands for respect.The way that he does is that he speaks to people who are higher than him courageously and with great confidence. He makes his position on the ship very clear no matter how high they are in the hierarchy
